How to Make Fondant Snowflakes

Here is a little photo tutorial of how you might make fondant snowflakes. My hands are dry (oh are they ever dry!), my techniques simple, but hopefully this will give you some ideas!

Fondant snowflakes make a nice touch to your holiday cakes or as table accents. Visit my Ornament Cake on Cake Space and see how they can add a nice touch to a Christmas cake!

Ok... so here we go!!!!

Add a bit of Crisco (vegetable shortening) to you hands to keep the fondant soft... I usually knead a bit into the fondant, to make it softer and easier to shape. Normally, I also use cornstarch to my cutting board, but you'll see I didn't do it this time around!

I use Wilton's gumpaste tools with fondant more often than not. Here you see my Winter dry hands punching the fondant with one of these helpful tools. It gives the flake a bit of form and helps hold the pieces together. I use the paintbrush to dab a bit of vanilla or water between the pieces, to help it stick.

Wilton makes painting fondant a whole lot of fun with a variety of luster dusts! Here, I've used silver, along with a bit of vanilla extract, mixed together and carefully painted on. It gives the fondant a nice sparkly sheen when dry.

Painted and ready to go! Just give your beautiful creation time to dry out before lifting.

Let your snowflakes dry on the cutting board, or you may lift with a spatula (carefully) and relocate to paper towels, or a paper plate (if you must). Let your fondant dry out before you lift a second time. I usually give the flakes a full 24-36 hours. Click on this image for more detail... the smaller flakes have a flowery look, thanks to one of the cutters from Wilton's gumpaste set.
Finished and ready to go! Place your snowflakes on or next to your Christmas cake, or use as table decorations.

Cake Space Blog

I wanted to post about my other blog here... sort of in a selfish attempt to increase traffic to that site and increase it's pagerank. For some unknown reason (at least to me) my page rank on Cake Space as dropped from a 3 to a 2. When this happens my traffic also drops as I lose favorability in Google's search standing.

I don't post to Cake Space nearly enough, but since cake decorating is more a hobby than a career for this stay-at-home babysitting mom, I don't always have a lot of content to add. In the coming weeks I hope to do better... featuring a few new cakes, occasionally with photo tutorials, or at least photos of portions of the cake decorating process.

Maybe you've seen my other blog before??? I offer a selection of cake decorating apparel from that blog... including aprons, t-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies, ball caps and mugs. If you need to do a little last minute Christmas shopping for your favorite cake decorator I'd love to have you visit my shop!

Ok... there's my shameless self-promotion appeal! Have a wonderful Christmas and stay tuned for more Cake Fun!!

Cake Games!

That is... cake games of the frosted kind! I couldn't believe it when one of my blogging buds informed me that there was an online gaming site with such an extensive library as to even include cake games! lol I had to check it out immediately and upon discovering that yes, she did in fact know what she was talking about, knew I had to add a couple of these sweet games to my Cake Fun blog. There are in fact 4 or 5 cake games and a cupcake game too! New games are being added to the site daily, some feature familiar characters such as Dora and Diego, others are completely foriegn to me, but are a lot of fun... I especially love the mystery genre.

You'll find the links to a couple of the cake games in my right sidebar. Searching for Online Games just got easier! Whether you're looking for cake games, mystery games, puzzles, word challenges, games for your kids, action and arcade games.... you'll find it all on Big Fish!

I'm currently working on my own game page which I will come back and share with you here. In the meantime, visit Big Fish and search their extensive online library for time killers, brain teasers, and just plain fun! If you're a blogger like myself, pick out your favorite game or two and share it with your readers. :)

Cafe Fun's Remake!

Welcome to the all new Cake Fun! This blog a work in progress so please don't trip over the signs of construction... the changing colors, lost and found page elements, and my lack of focus on what exactly belongs here! lol

For several years this blog highlighted Flickr's Cake Fun photosharing group and we randomly featured cake decorator's masterpieces here. However... for some time now I've felt that this site needed to be more. After all, why do we need to show Flickr photos here, when they're already on Flickr?

So, here I am looking for 3 things that will make this blog amazing, refreshing, and fun.
  1. If you have a cake photo you'd like to share, whether you're a professional decorator or an amature please let me know! You can feature your masterpiece here, link to your own blog if you have one, and share your creation with the world!
  2. If you have a cake decorating question, ask it here and I'll do my best to tackle your question in a new blog post.
  3. If you have a funny cake decorating story you'd like to share, do it here! Send me your story and upon approval we'll share it here. You can reveal your name or remain annonymous. :)
So this new blog is underway and may take a few twists and turns before it takes shape, but I do hope you'll join me on this new journey.

I've just reinstated the "Followers" section... check it out in the right sidebar and if you're so inclined sign up as a fan!
